Meeting Minutes

Cedar Hill Quilters Guild January 16, 2018 Meeting

2018 has gotten off to a rousing start in spite of the cold weather…..coats, hats, scarves and gloves were worn by all! We had an info packed meeting and some “dicey” games.

Our new President Claudia K. welcomed everyone and acknowledged our visitors. Charlotte C. was a past member and may rejoin, she is a modern quilter and also does longarm quilting. Cheryl a new quilter who quilts with Mary D in her church group. She plans on coming to our first workshop. Welcome to both.

  • Last months minutes were not available, so shall be approved at next meeting.
  • Mary D. gave the treasurers report and will be doing this monthly.
  • Marcia M. is our new webmaster and has great plans. We are now on Facebook and instagram. She plans on setting up a secure website so we can have access to a directory and treasury reports. we can connect with fellow quilters!
  • Sunshine/Shadows; Charlotte unable to attend. Please send any info to her. Her # is on the CHQG website board member list.
  • Tee=shirt sales. Last day to order Cedar Hill Quilters Guild tee-shirts is at next meeting, Feb 20th. Cost is $18. Sample sizes available to try.
  • Many January Birthdays..Bobbie, Ruth and Barbara were in attendance.  No more singing…and we didn’t have to tell our age!!
  • 1st workshop of the year…Feb 20 at the rec center from 1-5. We will break to go to dinner and be back for the meeting. We will be working on Charity Quilts. Just bring your sewing machine and “stuff” (you know, cutters, rulers, cutting boards, etc.). Material will be here (or you can bring your own).
  • TAQG: Marylyn Z reported that Rally Day is July 14. We are responsible for acquiring the housing for the speaker who will be doing a 2 day class on the 16 and 17th of July in Cedar Hill. There also will be classes in Mesquite on the 12 and 13th. Deb Tucker is the speaker. Her classes will fill up quickly….cost is $79. Ruler/s will need to be purchased. Marylyn will bring registration forms to next meeting, but advises those interested to go to Deb Tuckers website and register.
Marylyn also will be purchasing an item for the goody bags. Anyone interested in making a miniature quilt for the silent auction…it will need to be turned in by last Tuesday in May.
  • Library News -Angela C. has great ideas for our library. She thanked Bobbie and Pam for their service as last year’s Librarians. Angela plans on digitizing the library so you can peruse the books and submit a request ( by midnight the Sat before the meeting) and it will be set aside for you. She has recorded 117 books so far and feels that there are that many more to go. Website is https:/ To request a book, email or click Angela for the direct link.  She also feels that we need a larger cart as the present one is packed. She says, “We love quilting books because…the quilting possibilities are endless!”

  • Julie L. is our new “formerly Block of the Month” board member. She plans on us learning…Borders, margins and lessons from the edge of the quilt. Your assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to bring a center block. No size restriction, it can be a single block, a panel, antique linen or lace, or a fancy piece of material…YOU DECIDE. Then…you will get your first border assignment at the Feb meeting! This quilt can be any size you choose. Grab a buddy, maybe do a round robin border exchange. CHQG library references will help inspire you.
  • Quilting Bees. We have two groups:
  • Artistic Scrappers, meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month, 9-12 AM, at Gina P’s house. She is a program chairman on the board.  Check CHQG website for her address and tel#. Most people do handwork and cutting. Also socializing!
  • Sit “n Stich meets on the first Monday eve, 6=9 PM, at the 1890 house ( unless there is a quilt group staying there) . There is a big sewing room, so you can bring your machine, etc. and catch up on projects! Marylyn Z our TAQG rep is in charge of this and will email you as a reminder. She also has her # on the CHQG website.
  • President’s Challenge: Due at September meeting. Any thing made with a printed panel! It can be whole or cut up and any size. There will be 3 prizes:
    • 1.Creative use
    • 2.Best workmanship
    • 3.Judges choice
Best of all. judges will be husbands of guild members!! Also in that meeting, we will have a mini speaker. He will display and sell quilt objects made of wood. Should be a fun time!!
  • Ruth M is our Refreshment Board member. Sign up roster passed around for members to bring refreshments and door prizes and also sign up to be quilt “holder uppers”! We need at least three people to sign up for each month.
  • Next three months programs:
  • Feb: Tana Muellar the “crayon lady” will be here to discuss quilts and her fabric line from Blank fabrics.
  • March: Brenda Perry, Waste not Want not, scrap quilting
  • April: Robin Williamson, Modern Quilting, trends in design
  • Show and Tell:

We now have a podium in front that helps facilitate show and tell. The quilter can tell about her quilt, while the quilt “holder uppers” display the quilt. After the quilt is shown, it is placed on a bank of tables so that it can be viewed closer while we are on a short break. We had some great quilts tonight.

Sara G:
  • Glory Banner made with beautiful menswear fabrics with metallic letters spelling Glory.
  • Her first completed front and back quilt. Found fabrics, purchased squares put together to make a fine baby quilt.
Ruth M: Hearts entwined baby quilt. Looked like a storm at sea pattern
with color placement to make hearts. Gorgeous blue and green colors.
Mary D: 5 inch squares sashed with a blue fabric that bled through 3
washings. Still a beautiful quilt…great way to use scrap fabric.
Charlotte C: Granddaughter loved the quilt that Charlotte made her
when she was 6. Now that she is older she asked her to make it larger
to go over the sides of her bed, so Charlotte expanded it. Horses all
over the quilt, as her granddaughter plans to be a vet that cares for
Gina P
  • Large quilt made from Block of the Month from Country Stitches in Crowley…finished from years ago. Perfect example of our new “formerly Block of the Month”..a center block surrounded with borders and margins.
  • Mystery quilt from an online quilting class. Small patterned blocks placed with a white background then intricately quilted with an aqua thread.
Claudia K: Claudia has been making a scrap quilt a year. Showed us her
masterpiece log cabin scrap quilt (took three years) with an applique
border. Titled Flowers around the cabin.
