2020 February Newsletter

Cedar Hill Quilters Guild

Newsletter/ Minutes February 18, 2020

Meeting called to order at 7 PM. 36 members present, 3 guests and 102 volunteer hours. Georgia, Rita and Debbie brought door prizes and CJ, Georgia, Rita and Debbie brought refreshments.

Program - Our speaker Becky Goldsmith presented her program first as she had a long journey back to her home. She started her business Piece O’ Cake Designs with a friend in 1994. Her friend retired and Becky continues with her books and classes. Tonight she spoke of colors and how to choose and use them.

She talked about getting color inspiration from flowers, plants and color palates from photos. She also gets ideas from other quilts. She uses an App called Adobe Capture. It assists you in developing a color palate from a photo. Other creative inspiration can be gained with this app. Try it she says..it’s a real time sucker! Becky has a site called pieceocake.com that has free how- to videos. Click on her blog. read it and leave a comment. Every comment is placed in a drawing for a give away on Wednesday.

She talked of using the color wheel and values of colors from light to dark.

Above all use the colors that you love. Choose the background color first. Often it is good to use what you consider an ugly color. A small piece may accentuate a color you love.

Make all your quilts as if it is your favorite best!

We had discussion of keeping our website. It is only $24. a year so it will be kept.

Committee Reports;

Sunshine and Shadows, Mary Dunkerley:  One of our Members Mamie Bell passed away. She had a lovely Celebration of Life service.

Block of the Month, Debbie McCann: This month’s block contains flying geese. Any color way of your choice. Debbie showed us a super fine microfiber brush (that she purchased at Hobby Lobby) that does a fantastic job of cleaning a sewing machine of dust/lint bunnies.

TAQG, Maryln Zelenz: Rally day, July 11, 2020. No admission fee this year. Marti Michell is the speaker. She has 3 workshops. Check out the TAQG website for more information and registration forms.

Workshops, Rheta Grove: We had a great 2-part workshop. Everyone shared a tool that she either loved or hated in her sewing arsenal. Rheta shared several of her favorites. Debra shared the accucutter that she purchased thinking it would be a necessary quilters friend.  Now she considers it a foe! We then put the pedal to the metal and sewed together the two quilts of valor. Julie Landrith kept us on task! Two very nice quilt tops that will be quilted and presented to a veteran at rally day.
