Bucket List Quilts. M.J. Fielek was our speaker. She has 40 years experience quilting and has been a member of Plano, Sulpher Springs and the McKinney quilt guilds. She will be 80 in September so says she is on a timeline! She shared many beautiful quilts, pieced and also a bit of applique. What was interesting was the use of pieces of table linens to make a beautiful quilt. She used old tablecloths for backings on some of her quilts…amazingly gorgeous! She had old quilts made in “modern colors”. She talked of piecing together orphan blocks into quilts and then overdying them with Ritz dye to bring them
together. Unfortunately she did not have a example available to show us. We all could do that with our blocks accumulating in our houses. She had a great sense of humor..having been widowed many years ago she had a male friend that was ready to move in. He commented on her fabric collection and said it should be moved to the garage. Needless to say..he is history! She won a second place ribbon at Houston, but had a block rejected in a WalMart contest! It is always inspiring to see other quilters works and realize that there are no rules. Try new things, usecolors you like, materials you like, ideas that pop up. Make it yours! Don’t be AFRAID!!
